Pentagon To End F-22 Jets

The end of a fighter jet built for the Cold War and cancellation of a new fleet of presidential helicopters sparked concerns of job cuts at Lockheed Martin Corp. and its partners — but did not appear to shake Wall Street's confidence in defense stocks.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday the Pentagon will end the F-22 fighter jet and White House helicopter programs run by Lockheed, but would increase production of the company's Joint Strike Fighter.

Job and other budget figures released by Gates sought to assuage fears of deep cuts at the nation's largest defense contractor and its suppliers, helping Lockheed shares to rise nearly 9 percent.

Gates recommended more than doubling the number of Joint Strike Fighters to 30 in the upcoming budget, which would increase funding to $11.2 billion from $6.8 billion.

According to the Pentagon, there already are 38,000 employees working on the next-generation stealth fighter jet, known as the F-35. That number is anticipated to jump to 82,000 in fiscal 2011.

Still, Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed has said almost 95,000 jobs — mostly in California, Texas, Georgia and Connecticut — could be at risk if the Pentagon didn't buy more F-22 jets.

Gates offered a very different employment picture, saying the number of direct jobs would fall to 13,000 in fiscal 2011 from 24,000 this year.

JSA Research Inc. analyst Paul Nisbet said the disparity of F-22 and Joint Strike Fighter job figures appeared to "surprise a few people" and was enough to offset Lockheed losing two major programs.

Military analysts widely expected the radar-evading supersonic F-22 jet — considered an outdated weapon system — would not go beyond the 187 already planned. The planes cost $140 million each.

Lockheed said it's assessing the impact of Gates' decision on several defense programs.

Most of the F-22's are being built in Marietta, Ga. and Fort Worth, Texas. Boeing Co. manufactures the wings and other parts in Seattle. The engines are supplied by Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Corp. unit, in Middletown, Conn.

Georgia Republicans, Rep. Phil Gingrey and Sen. Johnny Isakson, said Gates' decision put thousands of manufacturing jobs at risk. And Jeff Goen, president of the union representing Lockheed's employees in metro Atlanta, said layoffs are inevitable unless Congress restores the fighter program.

"It's going devastate many families here," Goen said.

Goen didn't know how many jobs might be lost, but said Lockheed has about 2,000 workers — out of 7,000 at its Georgia plant — assigned to the F-22. The union, the International Association of Machinists Local 709, represents about 1,200 employees working on the jet's assembly.

Matthew Perra, a spokesman for Pratt & Whitney, said that without additional F-22 aircraft orders, the company will be forced to halt orders from suppliers within months.

Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies last month announced plans to trim 11,600 jobs from its global work force. And the company's CEO Louis Chenevert has said the diversified manufacturer may cut an additional 2,000 to 3,000 jobs in Connecticut if the Pentagon cancels production of the F-22.

Plans to buy a new fleet of White House helicopters also were among the programs terminated by Gates. With a price tag of $13 billion and a six-year delay, the helicopters were considered at risk to be cut in the 2010 budget.

Obama has said he would closely examine the program, noting that his current ride seemed "perfectly adequate."

Gates said the Pentagon will look into other options in fiscal 2011 for a new program to replace the aging helicopter fleet.

Cost overruns and delays have plagued Lockheed's program due partly to aggressive plans by the Bush administration to incorporate anti-missile defenses, communications equipment, hardened hulls and other advanced capabilities on the helicopters following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Navy waited nearly a year before formally disclosing the information to lawmakers as it sought to find ways to keep the program within budget. Those efforts failed.

Shares of Lockheed Martin added $5.97, or 8.9 percent, to $73.28 Monday. Many other defense stocks also rose.

A modern-day Lawrence of Arabia in Iraq

RAMADI, Iraq - Just like in the classic movie "Lawrence of Arabia," the man's eyes are piercing below his tribal headdress.

He looks straight at you with a determined, uncompromising stare. His word is law in his region of Anbar Province. He allows no dissent in his tribe and is not opposed to using force to punish those he deems to be threats to him or his tribe.

There are many Sunni tribal sheiks in Anbar, but there is only one Sheik Lawrence. His authority and name are inherited from his great-grandfather, one of the Bedouin leaders who rode beside the Englishman T.E. Lawrence during the World War I fight against the Ottoman Empire.

His tribe, the Anezi, is not particularly large, and the area he controls isn't prominent in Iraqi politics. But as US military and civilian officials have learned, he is a man to be reckoned with.

Sheik Lawrence - full name, Sheik Lawrence Mutib Hazan - is said to be connected to the Saudi royal family and has key contacts throughout the Persian Gulf and among the provincial government leadership in Ramadi and the Iraqi national government in Baghdad.

In partnership with the United States, Sheik Lawrence routed insurgents from his domain in Anbar, centered in the desert village of An Nukhayb. But his deal with the Americans came with a price. The United States is funding the reconstruction of the water wells and power distribution in An Nukhayb.

More recently, he has asked for US help in settling the boundary dispute between Anbar and Karbala provinces, a request that the top Marine general in Iraq is trying to fulfill.

When the history of the US involvement in Iraq is written, one focus will be the Americans' relationship with the sheiks of Anbar, the province that was the birthplace of the Sunni-led insurgency.

At first, the US military sought to ignore them as cultural anachronisms - a decision it soon came to regret as the insurgency burgeoned.

Then came the Anbar Awakening, a pledge by some of the sheiks to side with the Americans against the insurgency.

Within two years, Anbar went from lost cause to success story in the eyes of US officials, even before the buildup of troops in Baghdad.

Figuring out the pecking order among sheiks has been a challenge for the US military. Some sheiks have great authority; others pretend to. Some are what commanders have come to call "fake sheiks."

Sheik Lawrence, in his mid-50s, has passed all the tests of credibility.

He stuck with the Americans even when the founder of the Awakening was assassinated. He has called for continued opposition to the insurgency and cooperation with the national government in Baghdad.

Woman on cruise ship missing

MIAMI, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican forces searched the waters off Cancun, Mexico, for a woman reported missing on a cruise ship.

The hunt for Jennifer Feitz, 36, began just before 4 a.m. on the Norwegian Pearl when her husband told cruise employees he could not find his wife, CNN reported. After the crew found no signs of the woman on board the ship, officers notified the Coast Guard.

AnneMarie Mathews, a spokeswoman for the cruise line, said that the Norwegian Pearl began a seven-day trip to the western Caribbean on Sunday.

The Coast Guard dispatched a jet and a fixed-wing aircraft from Clearwater, Fla., to do an aerial search, Nick Ameen, a petty officer third class and spokesman for the Coast Guard said. The Mexican government supplied a helicopter and three search crews.

Former Child-Actor Mark Everett Killed by Los Angeles Police in Standoff

Mark Everett, real name Manuel Benitez, a former child-actor who appeared in shows like “Highway to Heaven,” “Trapper John M.D.,” and “Galactica 1980,” was shot and killed by Los Angeles police after a two-hour standoff in which he was holding his 7-year-old son hostage.

Everett had been sought by police since 2004 when his girlfriend, Stephanie Spears, was beaten to death with a dumbbell.

The 38-year-old Everett had been profiled on “America’s Most Wanted” in connection to Spears murder but remained undetected by authorities.

On Tuesday night he was found with his son inside a Chinese restaurant in El Monte, just east of LA, at which time he took his son to a back room where he held him hostage during the standoff. Everett was aid to have two handguns and exchanged fire with police before eventually being shot dead.

Everett’s son suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh in the exchange but is expected to recover.

Mexican beauty queen caught in anti-drug raid

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican beauty queen and international pageant winner has been detained by police along with alleged drug traffickers who had assault rifles and cash.

Laura Zuniga, the 23-year-old Miss Sinaloa from the marijuana-producing Mexican state, was held with seven men at a military checkpoint in Guadalajara, police said Tuesday.

"She is the beauty queen of Sinaloa and was aboard an SUV with the weapons and several of the men," said a police spokesman from western Jalisco state, home to Guadalajara.

The spokesman said police and soldiers at the checkpoint on the outskirts of Mexico's second-largest city were tipped off that traffickers were moving through the area Monday night.

"No one expected this young woman to be aboard, along with more than a dozen cell phones, lots of cash, pistols, bullets and two rifles," the spokesman said.

Zuniga won the Miss Sinaloa title in July and was to compete in the Miss International 2009 pageant next year in Asia. She was named "Queen of Hispanic America 2008" in a contest in Bolivia.

One of the arrested men is linked to the leadership of the Juarez cartel, which operates lucrative smuggling routes into the United States, police said. "This young woman was the gentleman's girlfriend," Jalisco state Security Minister Luis Carlos Najera said in a radio interview.

The model is the latest well-known figure to be linked to drug traffickers this year in Mexico, where President Felipe Calderon is battling powerful cartels with soldiers and federal police.

Top anti-drug security chiefs have been accused of passing vital intelligence to kingpins and police arrested seven soccer players and club directors at second division Mapaches de Nueva Italia in October. Prosecutors suspect the team is being financed by a drug gang for money laundering purposes.

President-Elect Barack Obama looks fit and relaxed during a vacation to Hawaii on Dec. 22. Obama, 47, played golf and walked around shirtless on Hawaii's balmy beaches.

The Obama family is staying at a $9 million oceanfront home over the mountain from downtown Honolulu, where Barack grew up. The five-bedroom house sits on an acre of land in front of Kailua Beach, a favorite spot for windsurfers, kayakers and dogwalkers.

Obama, who is resting before he takes office Jan. 20, is said to be a fitness fanatic, letting nothing keep him from his six-day-a-week regimen. Obama is an avid basketball fan who's reportedly interested in installing a basketball court at the White House when he takes office.

Exercise, Obama says, keeps him focused and relaxed. "The main reason I do it is just to clear my head and relieve me of stress," he recently told Men's Health magazine. "My blood pressure is pretty low and I tend to be a healthy eater."

The former U.S. Senator, who has kept up an insanely hectic schedule since he hit the campaign trail in 2006, prefers early-morning workouts. "Most of my workouts have to come before my day starts. There's always a trade-off between sleep and working out. Usually I get in about 45 minutes, six days a week. I'll lift [weights] one day, do cardio the next. "I wish I was getting a 90-minute workout," he added.

Obama's favorite snack is Planters Trail Mix, consisting of nuts, seeds and raisins, washed down with organic berry tea. His vices include smoked sea-salt caramels in milk chocolate.

Just when you thought you had seen everything, comes another device for the iPhone or iPod.

It’s called the iBreath, and it’s an alcohol breathalyzer from David Steele Enterprises. Its website describes the $79 gadget “as the ultimate iPod accessory that lets you take your own alcohol breath test so you can get home safely.” The developer’s website goes on to describe how it works: “Just fold out the blow wand and exhale into it for at least five seconds. Two seconds later, this amazing tool lets you know if you're within the legal limit to drive. It even houses a timer that can be set from one minute up to hour hours in order to remind you when it’s time for the next test.”

It’s not the first consumer breathalyzer, of course. A variety of other breathalyzers, including the AlcoHAWK Slim Breathalyzer (an “entry-level consumer breathalyzer”), are available from none other than breathalyzer.net and alcomate.com. But the iBreath requires no batteries, and can be plugged into the car if you happen to not have your iPod or iPhone with you.

And of course it doubles as an iPod FM transmitter that transmits your iPod tunes to any FM tuner. The developers say they hope this feature will make it more likely for users to keep the device plugged into their car stereo and not hidden away.

Opponents fear that the tool will inspire more drinking games than responsible behavior. Fans claim that even the most innocent of objects can be used incorrectly, and that this tool just may save lives.

While I feel that preventative measures (aside from the obvious one of planning ahead) are not always such a bad thing, I have a few concerns. First, I worry about its reliability, since law enforcement agents use tools that are calibrated regularly. Second, acceptable BAC levels vary by age (it is considerably lower for people under 21). But most importantly, this tool does nothing to assess other major factors that greatly affect driving, such as mood and fatigue.

And judgment. Which leads me to believe that people might also consider other options. For example, there’s TaxiMagic, by RideCharge, Inc., a free iTunes application that connects iPhone location features with taxi dispatch systems to let users book taxis instantly.

Global Warming Poses Serious Consequences for the Environment In The Future

In case you have been out of the loop, global warming is gradually becoming a serious concern to our environment and our planet as a whole. In general, global warming is caused by carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collection in the atmosphere. As it collects and builds up, it is little by little trapping the sun’s heat and warming up the planet.

So what does this mean for the environment? It is indeed warming up, but not so much that it is considerably noticeable. However, scientists predict that at this rate the average global temperature will be 3 to 9 degrees higher by the end of the century. In result of these rising temperatures, many states in the U.S. are already showing signs of the effects with some of the worst wildfire seasons ever in 2002.

In the same year, drought caused severe dust storms in states like Montana and Colorado, and floods created millions of dollars in damage to the states of Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Because of the continuous rise in heat, many mountains have been affected by their snow totals. Since 1950, snow accumulation has declined by 60 percent in some mountains and many winter seasons have become shorter.

Outside of the U.S., global warming has caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe just in 2003 because of extreme heat waves. What is the scariest of all facts is the decline of the Arctic’s perennial polar ice cap. At this rate, it is declining at 9 percent per decade.

Every year, scientists learn more about the direct effects of global warming on the environment and what society can do to help the cause. There is no denying the fact that global warming is a serious issue and if it continues on the path it is heading, there is much more devastation to come. Some of the consequences that are to come include melting glaciers and severe droughts causing water shortages, rising sea levels will flood the Eastern coastal seaboard and warmer sea surface levels will fuel more intense hurricanes.

Today’s unstable weather and the futures predicted weather pattern can certainly cause a major catastrophe if we as society don’t stop it today. Things as simple as using a fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent light bulb can preserve energy. By saving energy, it will eliminate a ton of carbon dioxide pollution that is released into the air.

Little by little, more information is being released to the public about global warming and people are gradually becoming more aware of the problem. There is no room to wait for tomorrow to begin saving energy because the future lies within our hands. All it takes is a little effort from everyone in the world to save the future of the planet from the horrific consequences global warming could potentially have.
